For most students from less advantaged communities, creativity and expression are usually far away from their minds because they are busy scraping for bits of food to eat day by day at best – sometimes much worse than that. But what if we gave them a space where imagination goes wild and expression is free, where colors tell stories and art serves as a bridge between self-confidence pure delight?
At Saturday Art Class, our journey began in 2016 at the Shankarwadi Noida Public School in Jogeshwari East, Noida. With 30 students participating, we quickly built this painting program into a nationwide movement and organization that has reached thousands and thousands of children from all parts of India through visual arts or social emotional learning classes!
For two years, we’ve provided weekly art and SEL classes, helping students unleash their creativity. Without a dedicated space for exploration, this incredible potential remains untapped. That’s why we’re creating an Art Room, a safe space for 600 students where they can dream, create, and thrive.
Why an Art Room?
A dedicated art room will transform how students experience creativity, offering benefits far beyond a traditional classroom:
- An art room will provide storage, display areas, and visual aids, creating an environment that sparks exploration, collaboration, and confidence.
- It will encourage students to share ideas, work on group projects, and learn from each other’s perspectives.
- A dedicated space will emphasize the importance of art in holistic education, bringing parents, teachers, and students together to celebrate creativity
This year, we’re taking a significant step to give back to our community of students, teachers and parents where our journey began by building a dedicated Art Room for the 600 students in Grades 1 to 8 at Shankarwadi Noida Public School.
