Mumbai to Ahmedabad Bullet Train

The ambitious Mumbai to Ahmedabad high-speed rail line, commonly referred to as India’s Project, aims to connect India’s financial capital to its largest city in Gujarat according to ambitious timetables laid out by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Stretching over 500 kilometers from end to end, the next-generation rail infrastructure hopes to significantly condense commute times for the millions traveling between the two major population centers upon completion.

“By twenty-twenty eight, travelers from across our great state will at last be free to rocket across the land in these marvels of modern transit,” he said with a flourish.

In a wide-ranging discussion with CNBC-TV18’s

formidable journalist Shereen Bhan at the IMEC Summit 2025, the chief minister expounded upon the steady progress being made, particularly in Gujarat where preparations were moving along smoothly and per the prescribed schedule. “While we in Maharashtra initially found ourselves playing catch up after a slower than hoped for start, thanks to round-the-clock efforts from all involved, I can happily report the project will be finished according to plan by the end of twenty-twenty eight,” he proclaimed with evident delight.

The chief minister concluded by remarking that upon completion,

the bullet train would serve as a shining symbol of engineering ingenuity and interstate cooperation for generations of Indians to come. While presenting Maharashtra’s annual budget, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar revealed that a station for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train would be located near the bustling Vadhvan port, conveniently connecting the cargo hub to the high-speed rail line.

Meanwhile, the National High Speed Rail Corporation reported

substantial progress on the construction of another stop along the route. According to a spokesperson, the underground station taking shape at the Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai has seen over 75% of its excavation completed. With over 14 lakh cubic meters of earth and rock extracted of the 18,722,63 cubic meters required, the cut-and-cover construction has started to take the sleek, modern shape intended to elegantly serve the future high-speed travelers passing through the heart of India’s financial center.  An initial 50 kilometer stretch in south Gujarat’s Surat and Bilimora districts will host the maiden trial run of the bullet train in 2026.

The momentous foundation stone for the gargantuan Rs. 1.1-lakh crore

As part of the collaborative pact between Japan and India, the Government of Japan would generously offer soft financing to India totaling a sizable Rs. 88,000 crore with an almost negligible interest of a mere 0.1% over 50 years for repayment. Receipt of the loan would permit a 15-year grace period prior to commencement of remittances.
